Pittock Mansion, in collaboration with OMSI and the Red Cross, is presenting an all-ages Storm Day event on October 15th from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. The event will feature the power of northwest weather in commemoration of the 1962 Columbus Day Storm – the most devastating wind storm in recorded history to hit the Pacific Northwest. Known as the “Big Blow,” the storm caused major destruction in northern California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. The extratropical cyclone, which began as Typhoon Freda, was the greatest natural disaster to strike the West Coast in more than half a century.
Visitors are invited to participate in OMSI-led demonstrations and experiments with a small tornado chamber, a weather balloon, and a Van de Graaff generator that creates static electricity and lightning; create hands-on weather-related projects such as a wind vane and a rain gauge; and learn tips from the Red Cross for storm preparation. Stories from those who recall the 1962 Columbus Day storm will also be shared. Event will run from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday October 15, 2011.
Regular admission prices will apply: Members: FREE; Adults: $8.00; Seniors (65+): $7.00; Youth (ages 6–18): $5.00; Children under 6: FREE
