Q: How do I quickly and easily search for events on the Events Calendar?

A: Search is available on our Events Calendar by age, neighborhood, cost, type of activity, and more

You have two options: searching, or filtering.

To search:
On the events calendar page, to the left of the page above the picture of the calendar, you’ll see a button that says “Search.”  When taken to this page, you can search by date, by keyword, by location (they will automatically come up once you type more than 3 letters), and by categories.  You must include at least one category to search.  Note that each category you click is an “AND.”  So if you click “Babies, Free, North Portland, Active, Music,” it will only include posts that have ALL of those options checked.

To filter:
If you are consistently only looking for a certain age range or type of activity, you can set up a filter. On the main events page, click on the third icon under the calendar (it’s got a little triangle thing on it).  You can set your posts to filter by city, ages, cost, etc.   Note for this function, every box you check is an “OR” – so if you filter by clicking on Portland and Toddler, you will get all events that are either in Portland or that are appropriate for toddlers.  Click “set filter” and you’re good to go.  If you change your mind, you can always come back and clear the filter.

Q: What kinds of events does PDX Kids Calendar include in the calendar?

A: We include, free of charge, user submissions for kid-friendly events and happenings in the Portland/Vancouver metropolitan area. You can submit your event directly through the “Submit Event” link on our Events Calendar – or email them to us at events (at) pdxkidscalendar (dot) com.

We may decline your events for free inclusion if:

  • they are a multiweek class
  • they are seeking to promote a sale or promotion/fundraiser/open house
  • they are overtly political
  • they are geared primarily toward adults and do not have an obvious connection to caregiving/parenting
  • they are over 60 miles from Portland-proper

If you event is excluded from being listed at no charge, we do have a “SPONSORED” option available for inclusion. Email advertising (at) pdxkidscalendar (dot) com for additional details, or check out our advertising rates and options here: http://www.pdxkidscalendar.com/advertise/.

We retain discretion to decline any events from inclusion even as sponsored events.

Q: How do I submit events to your calendar?

A: You can submit your event directly through our Events Calendar – there is a link at the top of the page that says “Submit Event.”  Please be sure to check to make sure your event is not already included before submitting.  Simply fill in as much information as you can. There’s also a field for you to send a message to us about your event – this portion will not show up on your event listing.

You will be notified if your event, for any reason, is not included.  All events are manually approved, so please be patient.  If you’re having trouble submitting an event or if you don’t hear from us or see your event within 72 hours, feel free to email us at events (at) pdxkidscalendar (dot) com.

A portion of the events will be listed in the monthly calendar section of Metro Parent Magazine.  To be considered for inclusion in the print edition, your event must be submitted at least five weeks prior to the first of the month in which the event occurs. For example: a July 20th event must be submitted by May 27th, five weeks before July 1.

Q: How often are events updated?

Events are updated on an almost daily basis.  However, we input and update the majority of our events at the end of the month prior to the current month (so the majority of December events will be input at the end of November).  We try very hard to make the calendar both comprehensive and accurate, however time constraints do keep us from being able to reconfirm every event on a daily basis.  For this reason, we strongly encourage you to check with the host organization before heading out.  And please let us know if anything on the calendar is inaccurate by sending an email to events (at) pdxkidscalendar (dot) com.

Q. I’m having trouble commenting on a post? What’s the deal?

For several reasons, we need a moderated commenting system in place on our site. The commenting system we have chosen is Disqus – which unfortunately does not allow you to comment from your phone when viewing the site. However, without the moderation system in place the spam we receive would probably force us to eliminate comments altogether.  We do encourage you to quickly create a profile in Disqus – it doesn’t add you to any other lists on our end or theirs – and really does make it much easier to comment on our posts.

Q: What is your policy on Facebook posting and promotions?

We love interacting with you, our Facebook fans. Your feedback, comments, and questions make our site a better place to land. We also believe that Facebook should be a place where people can freely share their thoughts and opinions. That said, in order to ensure that our Facebook page is a fun and helpful place for the Kids Calendar community, we have to put in place a few simple rules. We hope you understand and support our efforts to protect the integrity of our page so that it can remain an open and positive place for everyone.

PDX Kids Calendar reserves the right to moderate posts and comments for any reason, and to block you from posting on the page if your posts contain the following content:

  • Obscenities, discriminatory or derogatory language, or other language not suitable for a public forum.
  • Advertisements, “spam” content, phishing content or references to other products, offers, or websites – unless previously cleared by PDX Kids Calendar staff.
  • Any content or materials that you do not own, or for which you have not secured all necessary rights.
  • Email addresses, phone numbers, physical addresses, or other forms of contact information.
  • Any other post we deem hurtful or inappropriate to a fellow fan or staff member.

Thank you and please continue to share your photos, ideas and comments!
