With an interactive twist, Chagall for Children brings fine art to life for children and adults.
On view Sept 23, 2012- Jan 21, 2013
Artists come in all sizes at Chagall for Children, the new exhibit opening Friday, September 23 at Portland Children’s Museum. Arranged like a miniature art gallery, the exhibit features 14 reproductions of some of Marc Chagall’s most famous paintings, such as “The Circus,” “The Birthday,” and “Paris Through the Window.” Each painting is paired with an audio recording about its history and content and interactive components as imaginative as the paintings themselves.
Pint-sized artists are encouraged to explore color, light, composition, and texture by creating masterpieces of their own in the Paint Studio, a space developed especially for this exhibit. Filled with canvases, paints, and palettes, children stand at easels or sit on an artist bench (inspired by Chagall’s goats) to paint solo or collaborate on a colorful mural.
The Museum is delighted to announce the unveiling of a permanent art gallery dedicated to showcasing the creative potential of our community’s children. Made possible by generous support from the Harold and Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation, The Art Gallery at the Museum will be an ever-changing arts landscape inspired by the city’s youngest artists.
Chagall for Children is an exhibit where children can not only play with the art, but the art will play back. Many of Chagall’s paintings were inspired by his childhood, and Chagall for Children combines vivid artwork with unique, playful, hands-on activities making for the most fun you’ve ever had at an art show.
After looking at “The Concert,” children can push buttons to introduce different instruments and conduct their own symphony. Donning a camouflage cape, little ones can hide within the bright colors of “The Circus.” A fabric rendition of “The Rooster” lets children rearrange colorful tail feathers. Each activity adds depth and dimension to Chagall’s stunning pieces.
Chagall for Children is on view at Portland Children’s Museum this Friday through January 21, 2013. Visit portlandcm.org/chagall-for-children.
