When Dave Olson, aka Van Oodles, arrived in Portland in February of 2011 … we all thought he was nuts! He showed up at Cafe au Play with an amp, a wireless microphone and an iPod … ‘nuf said.
At first he tried to fit the mold of being like other kids musicians – singing “Old Macdonald”, “The Wheels on the Bus” and such … but it didn’t really work for him. You see, Van Oodles is unique. He brings an energy and goofiness as yet unparalelled in the PDX Kindie scene. He wears yellow socks with mustaches on his hands and sings about eating chicken … he dances around and gets physical … he sings goofy lyrics and makes funny faces … he has a perfectly timed show that works – complete with amp, iPod and wireless mic. He’s truly one of a kind!
We have listened to Van Oodles’ CDs more times than I can even count, and many of his songs have left me sleepless at night as they run through my head over … and over … and over. In a good way of course! (And Ali chiming in to say that I absolutely floss more often than I used to thanks to VO!) When we learned at the “Flossophy” video screening on Sunday that Dave – er Van Oodles – was going to be leaving Portland for a job in KOREA – we were of course excited for him to have this amazing opportunity – and saddened for the deep hole he will leave here in Portland in the hearts of those of us who have grown to love him.
We thought we’d send him off with a proper tribute – below are just a few quotes from those who love and adore him. We hope that someday he will return to our fair community to sing of flossing and veggie burgers once again.
We wish you nothing but good things in your new endeavors and will miss you very much! Please share your memories, photos and wishes in comments below or send to us at comments at pdxkidscalendar.com and we’ll post for you.
